ROVO – Imago

In i reccomend, lauren's, music on June 10, 2010 at 2:56 pm

ROVO were formed in japan by former boredoms guitar seiichi yamamoto, back in 1996. they use a hands-on method of creating a kind of music which is usually produced entirely electronic. this album is filled with beautiful experimental/psychedelic tunes and i consider it truly amazing. one of the drummers/percussionists is also from another legendary japanese band: “ground zero”, adding another reason as to why i like ROVO so much.

Shiina Ringo – 三文ゴシップ

In i reccomend, lauren's, music on June 8, 2010 at 11:36 pm

三文ゴシップ / superficial gossip would have to be my favorite shiina release. being her latest album (release: 2009), i have to say the queen has outdone herself with this one. you may recognize her talented voice from the band ‘tokyo jihen’. i hear lots of jazzy, pop, experimental tones in this album and i can’t stop putting ‘marunouchi sadistic (EXPO VER.)’ on repeat, it’s that good. whether you’re a japanese music fan or not, i reccomend you listen to shiina ringo! she’s the best!

Susumu Ueda – One Litre Of Tears OST

In i reccomend, lauren's, music on June 7, 2010 at 9:28 pm

this is a beautiful soundtrack to a beautiful drama! the japanese drama follows the story of a girl with a terminal illness and the hardships she has to overcome. i recommend you should see it, as i cried over one litre of tears! the songs are piano / violin based and very well composed. my personal favorites from the OST are ‘seimei aru kagiri -sub theme-‘ & both versions of ‘only human’.

Boredoms – Chocolate Synthesizer

In lauren's, music on May 23, 2010 at 4:21 pm

i’ve shown you boredoms at their mellow and calm state, but this album definitely showcases how crazy they can get! this album is basically eYe yelling and the other band members following & repeat. i guarantee you that it sounds amazing. i reccomend it to anyone with an open mind to music and enjoys not so serious songs! especially the track ‘acid police’. it always sounds like they are saying something like “i sell portishead” or “oh shit, paul is dead” etc. this album is worth a listen, but it sounds like nothing like vision creation newsun.

Piana – Eternal Castle

In lauren's, music on May 22, 2010 at 10:05 am

piana is naoko sasaki, born in japan in 1979. she has a delicate, cute, soothing voice, which is perfect for ambient sounding songs. this album is like floating a cloud, i feel so light and calm when i listen to it. you might even fall asleep during the album because it’s so soft and delicate! stand out tracks are ‘two of us’ & ‘snowflakes’.

Nujabes – Metaphorical Music

In i reccomend, lauren's, music on May 22, 2010 at 8:39 am

nujabes was a japanese hip-hop producer who had strong influences of jazz in his music. personally, i love him and i think he was divine, i wish he could keep making music but sometimes the best lives are cut short. this is my favorite album, full of positive lyrics & lovely music. stand out tracks are ‘think different’, ‘lady brown’, ‘a day by atmosphere supreme’ & ‘blessing it remix’.

わたしのココ – childhood in housing complex

In i reccomend, lauren's, music on May 21, 2010 at 10:15 pm

to me, わたしのココ / kesson shoujo are kind of mysterious. the band members are only listed as “yoss”, “lala”, “keyboard-girl” & “self-styled little sister”.  a good friend of mine showed me this album today and i automatically fell in love with the song ‘may’ (mainly because i’m a sucker for piano !!!). the song titles are all named after months of the year and it’s a very nice little ambient album. definitely worth listening to!

Lily Chou-Chou – Breathe

In favorite, i reccomend, lauren's, music on May 21, 2010 at 8:42 pm

lily chou-chou is a fictional character created for the film ‘all about lily chou-chou‘. salyu (a japanese artist) sings all of the songs under this name. the funny story is, i fell in love with the soundtrack before i had even viewed the film. the film is my favorite of all time, and it will stay that way forever. this soundtrack is like floating in space, so ethereal and relaxing, just like the film. i reccomend this to everyone! also, see the film as well if you love asian cinema as much as i do!

黒色すみれ – Anderu Meruhen Koushinkyoku

In lauren's, music on May 21, 2010 at 8:29 pm

kokusyoku sumire have a unique sound like i’ve never heard before. i first discovered this band in the japanese gothic lolita bible, and was intrigued from there on. their music could be described as a mix between japanese opera & neo-classical. i always think of it as the soundtrack to an old japanese circus! i reccomend if you love high, operatic voices and the violin.

Flipper’s Guitar – Doctor Head’s World Tower

In lauren's, music on May 21, 2010 at 10:41 am

flipper’s guitar consist of keigo oyamada & kenji ozawa (nephew of famous conductor, seiji ozawa). they make chirpy, happy shibuya-kei songs. it’d be hard for an album *not* to put a smile on your face! stand out tracks are ‘the world tower’, ‘aquamarine’ & ‘dolphin song’.
